We took the day off! A full zero day! Too much rain in the forecast meant we hunkered down and explored the cute and quaint adorable little VT town of Warren instead of hiking and getting soaked to the bone. An excellent decision.

Wednesday July 1 – Day 12

I can’t remember now if we made the decision to stay in and take the day off last night or this morning. Either way, it was a good call. Hostel Tevere is nice – owned by a couple with a few dogs and a toddler, in an old farmhouse (just like everything else in VT, as you may have noticed).

We wake and go to the Warren General Store – a gathering point for the townsfolk and tourists alike. They have great breakfast food, sandwiches, and coffee. I eat a breakfast sandwich, croissant, and scone. I think hiker hunger is sinking in… We explore pretty much every square inch of the store and chat with customers and employees. We meet Charlie Brown – an amazing Vermont character who lives by Blueberry Lake. He offers us a yard and gazebo to sleep in, should we need it, and gives us his card.

We yogi a ride to the Warren Co-op from a wine seller. The strong winds and heavy rains nearby cause the power at the Co-op to go out (so happy we’re not hiking in that). Eventually it comes back on, we buy a feast of veggies, cheese, bread, and wine, and yogi a ride back to the Warren store where we get more food – sandwiches and snacks.

New shoes for the rest of the trail! Merrell Capras - waterproof. Thanks N&C!

Back to the Hostel. We gorge ourselves on the fresh food and wine. A rest day is good. The sun comes out too! Well for a minute… I shower, nap, stretch, do yoga, and somehow fritter the afternoon away. In the evening we hitch a ride to the Castlerock Pub at Sugarbush, eat nachos, and drink VT beer. Another ride hitched back to the hostel. A good nights’ sleep…
